Matisse pintó este retrato en 1905, usando como modelo a su mujer, Amélie Parayre. Es una pintura de una gran audacia cromática, que rompe con la representación realista de las formas, la luz y la perspectiva, supeditando todo a la potencia expresiva del color.
En realidad Amélie no era así, sino más bien Matisse la veía así. Como reza el título del cuadro, una línea verde cruza el rostro de su mujer de frente a barbilla, y es quizás esa línea la verdadera protagonista de la obra, al hacerla interactuar el artista con los demás colores como un todo armonioso.

Actually, Amélie was not like that, but rather Matisse saw her like that. As the title of the painting says, a green line crosses his wife's face from forehead to chin, and that line is perhaps the true protagonist of the work, as the artist interacts with the other colors as a harmonious whole.
